Newark to Preview Sustainability Action Plan 2020 at Earth Day Celebration

April 18, 2018 - Newark, NJ – Mayor Ras J. Baraka will celebrate Earth Day by issuing a directive to all Department Directors to incorporate sustainability priorities into their annual plans. At the event, he will preview the City’s Sustainability Action Plan 2020 commitments to interdepartmental collaboration to make Newark cleaner, greener, healthier, more engaged, and more prepared in the face of climate change.

Sustainability commitments include actions related to litter and recycling, brownfields remediation, green infrastructure, urban forestry management, open space planning, healthy development, idling enforcement, childhood lead exposure and asthma triggers in homes, urban agriculture, climate planning, renewable energy and alternative fuels infrastructure, energy efficiency savings, and internships for young sustainability champions. A summary of the Sustainability Action Plan 2020 will be provided at the event.

Mayor Baraka will invite residents to join him in celebrating Earth Day by participating in one of several ongoing sustainability initiatives including: citywide clean ups, the Adopt A Catch Basin program, and Newark Trees Count.
