Engineering

The Department of Engineering prepares, maintains, operates and repairs the City of Newark's infrastructures. This department is responsible for improvements and enhancements including: roadways, traffic and transportation, municipal parks, and the issuance of all construction permits. Through strategic planning and quality management, we ensure that our facilities provide citizens favorable and safe living conditions, conserving energy and improving the quality of lives.

This department consists of the following divisions:

  • Building Division (UCC)
  • Code Enforcement
  • Traffic and Signals

Building Division

The Office of Uniform Construction Code (UCC) provides comprehensive administration and enforcement pertaining to construction codes, providing administration and enforcement of those rules throughout the City of Newark. This department is responsible for the issuance of building permits and inspection services for the construction, renovation and rehabilitation of new and old buildings, both residential and commercial, in the city’s neighborhoods.

Division of Enforcement and Inspections

The Office of Code Enforcement ensures the health, safety and resilience of the built environment for the City of Newark. This Division provides a variety of services related to statewide Fire Prevention and Building Code.

Division of Traffic and Signals

Traffic and Signals provides comprehensive planning, development, construction management, replacement, and operation of the city’s transportation infrastructure to ensure the safety and ride-ability of city streets.
