NEWARK SENDS THREE YOUNG BOXERS TO SPAIN TO COMPETE IN INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT

Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Director Recreation, Cultural Affairs, and Senior Services Patrick Council announced today that the City of Newark today sent three junior boxers from the Ironbound Recreation Center to compete in the Boxam Youth and Junior International Boxing Tournament, in Murcia, Spain. The bouts will take place through April 13.

Representing Newark will be Dwight Flemming, Keith Colon, Jr., and Zahir Abdus Salaam, all Junior Olympic Amateur boxers, based at the Ironbound Center at 226 Rome Street in the East Ward. They will face boxers their age from across the globe.

“Newark has a long and great athletic history, from Paul Robeson to Shaquille O’Neal. All of Newark joins me in sending our best wishes to our next generation of superstar athletes as they begin their quest for glory,” Mayor Baraka said.

All athletes are accompanied by chaperones and will compete at the Principe de Asturias Sports Hall.
