MAYOR RAS J. BARAKA STATEMENT ON SUPREME COURT DECISION ON BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP

← Back to News overview

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling on the universal blocks against Trump’s order to end birthright citizenship in America is a broad step toward limiting the power of federal judges to protect our rights and liberties from executive orders. It signals an intention to puncture the sanctity of the U.S. Constitution which has been faithfully amended over centuries to move our national steadily toward a more perfect, inclusive, and democratic ideal.

“The 14th Amendment is our nation’s corrective response to the painful indignity suffered by former slaves and their children. It is an acknowledgement that our Constitution needed bolstering to protect groups of people from being excluded and discriminated against.

“All these generations later, ‘we the people’ are once again called to protect each other and guard the fundamental laws of the Constitution to ‘form a more perfect union, establish justice…and secure the blessings of liberty.’ At this critical crossroad of the Great Experiment, not one of us is exempt from the obligation to defend and preserve our American values.”
