MAYOR RAS J. BARAKA STATEMENT COMMEMORATING NATIONAL PRIDE MONTH

← Back to News overview

“Newark has a tradition of celebrating our LGBTQ+ community with an annual weeklong program of events in July, and we invite the world to come enjoy this year’s festivities beginning July 7.

“Meanwhile, I want to recognize and thank members of my administration and every Newark resident who celebrates June as Pride Month.

“Our city is inspired by your commitment to your authentic self. We honor the courage it takes to engage with the world at a time when our national leaders and courts are infringing your rights and freedom; when the Department of Defense exposes a concerning confusion about might, strength and security by questioning the validity of Harvey Milk’s name on a Navy vessel.

“In Newark, we know better. We value the inherent gifts and talents of everyone. We condemn exclusion and intolerance. And we place the power of love for each other above all other strengths.

“Happy Pride Month to all!”
