MAYOR BARAKA DISTRIBUTES MORE THAN 5,000 TURKEYS TO NEWARK RESIDENTS AT MULTIPLE LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE CITY’S FIVE WARDS

Newark, NJ—November 22, 2021— Mayor Ras J. Baraka, the Believe in Newark Foundation, HelloFresh, Pepsi, Bindi North America, Inc., The Home Depot of Newark, New Jersey Children’s Foundation, Bimbo Bakeries, Inc., and The Brantley Brothers Transportation Company distributed more than 5,000 free turkeys and additional food products to Newark residents at multiple locations throughout the city’s five wards. Hours of distribution were between noon to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the following 15 sites:

  • First Avenue Elementary School, 214 1st Avenue
  • Vince Lombardi Center, 201 Bloomfield Avenue
  • Rafael Hernandez Elementary School, 345 Broadway
  • The Clubhouse, 205 Spruce Street
  • Shani Baraka Women’s Resource Center, 300 Clinton Avenue
  • Newark Street Academy, 208 Chadwick Avenue
  • Nellie Grier Senior Citizen Center, 98 Maple Avenue
  • South Ward Improvement District, 1049 Bergen Street
  • East Side High School, 238 Van Buren Street
  • Hawkins Street Elementary School, 8 Hawkins Street
  • Boylan Street Recreation Center, 916 S. Orange Avenue
  • City Hope Ministries, 92 S. 6th Street
  • First Bethal Baptist Church, 854-860 Isabella Avenue
  • Renaissance Church, 199 2nd Avenue
  • Unified Vailsburg Service Organization, 475 Irvington Avenue

Mayor Baraka attended the giveaway at The Clubhouse, located at 205 Spruce Street.

“These have been challenging times, but through our unity and perseverance, we still have much to be grateful for. I sincerely thank our sponsors for coming together, once again, to share the bounty of this season to our residents along with my wishes for a blessed Thanksgiving,” Mayor Baraka said.

The turkeys were disseminated on a first-come first-served basis at multiple sites around the city.

The City is grateful for the generous support this year from its sponsor, the Believe in Newark Foundation, and the co-sponsors:

  • HelloFresh: Delivered 5,800 boxes of produce
  • Green Giant: Donated more than 7,000 cans of Green Giant vegetables
  • Pepsi Bottling Co.: Donated 1,200 cans of assorted Pepsi products
  • Brantley Brothers Transportation Co.: Transported donations to multiple sites
  • New Jersey Children’s Foundation: Donated 500 turkeys
  • Bindi North America, Inc.: Donated 300 Pistachio Cheesecakes
  • Bimbo Bakeries, Inc.: Gave two pallets of assorted items from Entenmann’s, Arnold’s Stuffing and Sara Lee Bread Line
  • The Home Depot of Newark: Hand Sanitizers, gloves and masks 

“At HelloFresh, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy a home-cooked meal around the table with loved ones, especially during Thanksgiving,” said Uwe Voss, CEO of HelloFresh U.S. “We are grateful to be able to contribute to the Newark Gives Thanks event to provide local residents with fresh ingredients to prepare and enjoy a Thanksgiving feast.”

“Bimbo Bakeries is proud to be donating 400 bags of stuffing and 400 packages of dinner rolls to the Newark Gives Thanks event,” said Donald Strunck, Sales Center Leader for Bimbo Bakeries. “The Mayor’s office does a wonderful job supporting the City of Newark and we at Bimbo are pleased to be part of such a fantastic event.”

“Bindi is proud to once again help out the City of Newark with the Newark Gives Thanks event,” said the Bindi Dessert Team.
