Mayor Ras J. Baraka, Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose and Chief of Police Darnell Henry announce the promotion of three African American women who will each head key areas of Newark Police Division leadership.

“We are pleased to welcome these superior officers into higher ranks and broader levels of oversight in the City of Newark,” Mayor Baraka said. “These promotions reflect our resolute commitment to foster increased diversity and inclusion in key leadership positions within our Police Division. Our promotion of three African American women to high-profile leadership positions all at once is both timely and unprecedented.”

“These acting supervisors join the command staff after the retirement of more than 10 commanders,” Director Ambrose said. “They mirror the community we serve and are the future of the Newark Police Division.”

Acting Captain Sharonda Morris will oversee the Newark Police Division’s Office of Professional Standards. Acting Captain Tawana Rollins will head the Consent Decree & Planning Division. And Acting Captain Aloma Wright-Johnson will serve as lead commander of the 6th Precinct.
