Key Points from June 24, 2020 Coronavirus (COVID-19) Daily Update

← Back to News overview

• Today, we made history by signing into law an ordinance that will:

o Denounce hate crimes and racism, police brutality and declare white supremacy groups as terrorists in the City of Newark;

o We will have an Office of Violence Prevention funded by 5% of police budget;

o It includes a “See something, say something, do something” policy to demand that all City of Newark employees immediately intervene and report blatant civil rights violations by other employees, including police and fire.

o And we will close the 1st Precinct of Newark Police Division (by Dec. 31, 2021), where the Newark Rebellion began in 1967– and repurpose for trauma care, violence prevention, workforce development, and a museum chronicling local activism in Newark and police positive changes.

• IMPORTANCE OF WEARING MASKS, GETTING TESTED AND CONTACT TRACING

o It is not only important but you MUST wear a mask if you are outside.

o If you see someone without one, ask them where is theirs.

o We have to protect ourselves and each other and masks will help us continue to do that.

o Also get tested. If you have not, we have several sites throughout the city.

o And be sure to answer your phone in case you have come into contact with someone who has tested positive. That will help us continue to control the spread as well.

o So remember 1) WEAR MASK, 2) GET TESTED, 3) HELP WITH CONTACT TRACING BY ANSWERING YOUR PHONE

• FOOD RELIEF PROGRAM

o Today, we continued with our food distribution to families.

o To date, we have served 651,674 meals and will continue until September 1st

o If you or someone you know needs food, please leave your information in the comments. The next food delivery will be next Wednesday.
