Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Department of Public Works Interim Director Kareem Adeem announced today that the City of Newark will begin its Leaf Recycling Collection program tomorrow, Wednesday, October 15 and will last through December 31, 2025.

Leaf pick-ups will be made as part of DPW’s regularly scheduled yard waste collection. The schedule is as follows:

·         Zone A: Every third Wednesday of the month

·         Zone B: Every fourth Wednesday of the month

Residents should place their leaves in biodegradable, paper bags and place them on the curb the night before between the hours of 7 P.M. and 10 P.M.

“Through the cooperation of our residents, I am confident that we can dispose of our leaves in ways that contribute to a more environmentally-friendly Newark,” said Director Adeem.

The Department of Public Works is giving the following tips to residents on removing leaves from your premises:

  • Whenever possible, store leaves in a backyard compost bin. This method is preferred to reduce waste at the source.
  • Leaves must be placed in a bio-degradable paper bag, which can be purchased from most hardware stores. Do not use plastic bags.
  • Failure to use a bio-degradable paper bag will result in fines and the leaves will not be collected.
  • Do not rake or blow leaves into the street. State regulations require all leaves to be disposed of in bio-degradable bags placed at the curb. Failure to comply may result in fines ranging from $100 to a maximum of $1,000.
  • Leaf bags must NOT contain large branches. Branches should be separated and tied up in a bundle. Leaf bags can contain grass clippings and other yard trimmings.
  • Newark residents can drop off yard waste at official DPW service centers at the following locations: 61 Verona Avenue, 244 South 12thStreet, 99 Earl Street, and 29 Waydell Street.
  • If a city resident is using a contracted landscaper for lawn maintenance, the landscaper is responsible for disposing of the leaves.
