CITY OF NEWARK TO HOST” SENIOR OLYMPIC FUN DAY” ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 27, FROM 9 A.M. TO 1:30 P.M., AT MALCOLM X SHABAZZ HIGH SCHOOL STADIUM, 90 JOHNSON AVENUE

Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Mayor’s Aide for Senior Citizen Affairs Bessie Walker, announced today that the City of Newark will host the inaugural “Senior Olympic Fun Day” on Saturday, August 27, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Malcolm X Shabazz High School Stadium, located at 90 Johnson Avenue, in the City’s South Ward.

Residents aged 55 and up will be able to participate in a wide array of games and events, including the following:

 

  • 15-Yard dash: 60 years and over
  • 30-Yard dash: Ages 55-59
  • Horse Shoe Pitch
  • Hula Hoop Dance
  • Lawn Bowling
  • Pitch the Cans
  • Turbo Javelin Throw
  • 4 by 100 Meter Walk Relay
  • Softball Throw
  • Arm Wrestling
  • Card Games (Bid Wisk)
  • Darts
  • Checkers
  • Dominoes

We believe that senior citizens should be able to maintain their health and a high quality of life,” Mayor Baraka said. “This Senior Olympics will give them an opportunity to participate in friendly sports competition, stay fit, and enjoy a day of fun at one of our great athletic facilities with their families, friends, and neighbors.There will also be lunch and giveaways for the participants.Every senior citizen must register in advance to participate in athletic events or as a spectator. Forms can be picked up at 94 William Street, 1st Floor, Senior Affairs Office. If you have a serious medical issue, please do not participate in events.
