Newark, NJ – October 14, 2016 – The City of Newark, Municipal Council President Mildred C. Crump, members of the Newark Municipal Council, and the American Cancer Society will lead the society’s 19th Annual “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” Walk to raise funds to fight breast cancer and increase awareness of the need for early screening and treatment on Sunday, October 16, 2016, at 10 a.m., starting at New Jersey Devils Championship Plaza, Prudential Center, in downtown Newark. The plaza is located at Mulberry and Market Streets.
To date, the American Cancer Society has funded more than $400 million in breast cancer specific research, more than any other non-government organization.
Registration starts at Championship Plaza, on Mulberry and Market Streets at 8 a.m. The walk will begin at 10 a.m.
The Mayor’s Office, the Department of Administration, the Department of Health and Community Wellness, the Office of Communications, and the Office of Council President. Crump will lead a team of Newark Municipal Employees, breast cancer survivors, and residents in this important walk for a cure. Throughout the year, Newark Municipal employees have raised funds for this campaign through bake sales and “pink sales” to heighten awareness of the cause.
20,000 people made this annual walk in 2015, and $402,000 was raised to fight breast cancer, with thousands more walkers and fundraising than in previous years. This was an increase of 3,000 participants and $30,000 over the previous year’s figure.
