CITY OF NEWARK REMINDS RESIDENTS: ALL NON-UNIFORMED CITY SERVICES WILL BE CLOSED ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, FOR ELECTION DAY HOLIDAY AND ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 11, FOR VETERANS DAY

Newark, NJ – November 2, 2020 – Mayor Ras J. Baraka and the Newark Municipal Council reminded residents today that City Hall will be closed and most non-emergency Newark municipal services will be suspended on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, in observance of Election Day. Police, Fire, and other uniformed emergency services will be unaffected.

Trash will not be picked up by the City as scheduled on Tuesday, November 3, and recycling pick-ups will not be made. Therefore, residents should not put out their trash on Monday night, November 2. In addition, alternate side of the street parking regulations will not be enforced.

Trash and recycling pick-ups in areas impacted on November 3 will resume on Friday, November 6. Recycling scheduled for November 3 will resume on Tuesday, November 10. Bulk pick-up will take place on Wednesday, November 4. Residents should place their trash and bulk at the curb between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. the night before collection days in accordance with municipal ordinances.

Due to the federal holiday of Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11, there will be no bulk collection for Zone B (Tuesday/Friday garbage collection) on Wednesday, November 11. Zone B bulk collection will be rescheduled for Wednesday, December 9. Residents who place bulk at their curbs will be required to bring it back within theirs home or risk a possible summons.  In accordance with the ordinance, residents are limited to 10 bulk items or fewer regardless of the number of units or people living at the address.  

The Department of Health and Community Wellness’s inspection services and health clinic will not operate on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, and Wednesday, November 11, 2020. In addition, the Bureau of Vital Statistics will be closed. Residents will not be able to apply for permits, birth certificates, name-change certificates, marriage licenses, nor pay water or tax bills at City Hall. However, the Medical Director and Department’s Division of Surveillance and Prevention are on call for medical and public health emergencies.

The Municipal Court will also be closed on Election Day and Veterans Day. However, a judge will be available to preside over bail hearings for defendants in custody. Residents can make payments on parking and traffic tickets through the website www.njmcdirect.com. To utilize this website, residents will need their summons number, including the prefix, and the City of Newark’s court code, which is 0714.
