Newark, NJ – May 7, 2021 — Mayor Ras J. Baraka, the Mayor’s Office of Special Projects, the Department of Health and Community Wellness, in collaboration with Walgreens and Tate’s Cookies, held two Mother’s Day celebrations and health and wellness screenings at two senior center sites today. The first took place at Kretchmer Elderly, located at 991 Frelinghuysen Avenue in the South Ward, from 9 a.m. to noon. The second was held at Stephen Crane Elderly, located at 801 North 6th Street, in the North Ward; from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

“As we honor and celebrate our mothers this year, we have decided to mark this important weekend by addressing the most important issues our seniors and mothers face: health and wellness in the midst of COVID-19,” said Mayor Baraka. “Thank you to Walgreens, Tate’s Cookies, IHOP, and Kings Family Restaurant for partnering with us on this very special occasion and for making this year’s Mother’s Day celebration joyous.”

“Walgreens is proud to partner with the City of Newark to bring important health and wellness information to residents of Newark.  During the pandemic it’s more important than ever for people to learn how to keep themselves and their families safe and healthy,” said Shrey Patel, Healthcare Supervisor, Walgreens.

“We know a bag of Tate’s Cookies on the table is a guarantee of a smile, so we are delighted to be able to participate in a program under the auspices of Mayor Baraka that brings together a united community committed to its future and a well-deserved celebration of motherhood,” said Nancy Pak, the CEO of Tate’s Bake Shop.

The City of Newark’s Department of Health and Community Wellness was on site conducting various health screenings as well as providing residents with information on where to get additional COVID-19 screening and vaccine locations throughout Newark. In addition, 500 gift bags, generously donated by Walgreens, were provided at each location which included masks, hand sanitizer, and lotion. Digital blood pressure monitors and/or blood oximeters were given out by Walgreens during the morning session at Kretchmer Elderly. Tate’s Cookies of Southampton, New York, provided seven-ounce bags of chocolate chip cookies to the attendees at both locations. The City of Newark donated masks for the attendees.
