Mayor Ras J. Baraka, the Newark Municipal Council, Deputy Mayor of Community Engagement Jacqueline Quiles, and Director of Recreation, Cultural Affairs, and Senior Services Patrick Council announced today that the City of Newark will host a “Fighting for the Youth” professional wrestling event on Sunday, May 21, from Noon to 6 p.m., at the corner of Verona and Summer Avenues in the city’s North Ward. The wrestling show and ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Wrestlers from Puerto Rico, Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Guatemala will grapple in the ring in the bouts, to promote safety in the community and oppose drug abuse.

“We are excited to bring the entertaining action of professional wrestling to Newark to spread the positive messages of saying no to drug abuse and yes to living positive, wholesome, productive lives. We will also provide youth with entertaining activities and adults with useful information,” said Mayor Baraka. “I urge Newark families to join us at Summer and Verona Avenues on Sunday for an afternoon of education, fun, and headlocks.”

Family activities at the event will include face painting, a game truck, and a bounce house. There will also be resource tables for adults and presentations on fire safety by the Newark Fire Division.

The event is sponsored by the Department of Recreation, Cultural Affairs, and Senior Services and Pro Wrestlings International.
