East Ward Council Member City of Newark, New Jersey

Councilman Michael J. Silva, a lifelong Newark resident and proud son of Portuguese immigrants, brings over 25 years of law enforcement and community service to his role as East Ward Council Member. A graduate of St. Benedict’s Prep and the Newark Police Academy, Silva served as a Community Service Detective, where he led and supported countless quality-of-life initiatives citywide.

Deeply involved in the East Ward, he has worked with numerous civic, business, and cultural organizations and served on the boards of the Ironbound Community Corporation and Ironbound BID. A cancer survivor, Councilman Silva actively supports causes like the American Cancer Society and Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

A dedicated father, sports fan, and daily Mass attendee, Councilman Silva remains focused on improving safety, services, and opportunities for all Newark residents
