Mayor Ras J. Baraka will kick-off the launch of this year’s “Summer Fun in the City” program on Friday, June 30 at 10 a.m. at Boylan Recreation Center. The center is located at 916 South Orange Avenue in the West Ward.
The event will be an intergenerational kick-off of the city’s summer programs and activities for residents, including the “Summer Sun-Up” children’s nutritional program. Attendees will include Mayor Baraka, West Ward Council Member McCallum, and Department of Recreation, Cultural, and Senior Services Director Patrick Council.
Boylan Recreation Center has undergone recent renovations and now possesses an outdoor pool, playground area, full court basketball area, out-door volleyball pit, computer room, indoor arcade, state of the art boxing gym, and a multitude of artistic murals for display.
The “Summer Fun in the City” program offers a variety of athletic, artistic, cultural, educational, and recreational programming to engage the community and provide safer streets throughout the summer.
Programming will include a schedule of organized events, clinics, and tournaments throughout August including: basketball, soccer, street hockey, dance, art, theater, poetry, reading programs, movie nights in the park, and free family movies at Newark’s Citiplex 12.
