Mayor Ras J Baraka to Host Annual "Newark Kids Rock" Arts and Culture Event for Youth

Mayor Ras J. Baraka, the Newark Municipal Council, The Newark Youth Ambassadors, and other partners will host the city’s third annual “Newark Kids Rock” cultural and artistic program on Sunday, August 20, from Noon to 10 p.m., at Lincoln Park, in Newark’s downtown.

The event will promote and highlight creativity among young people, offering Olympic-style games, dance contests and feature a performance by Hip-Hop artist Phresher.  Darnell and Lea Robinson, reality TV show stars on BRAVO’s “First Family of Hip-Hop” will co-host portions of the program and perform their hit singles. There will also be opportunities for youth to create murals with the Newark Arts District and artist Rodney Gilbert of Yendor Arts.

More than 37 Newark-based performers will present poetry, singing, dancing, and artistic programs. Newark has a long tradition of arts, culture, and music, which includes such names as Connie Francis, Paul Simon, Cissy Houston, Whitney Houston, Sarah Vaughan, Queen Latifah, Michael B. Jordan, and Savion Glover. This year’s event will highlight the next generation of musicians and artists to carry on that rich history.

The event partners include: Newark ACE, Whole Foods, Newark Community Economic Development Corp., Rita’s Ice, Rutgers University, Municipal Council, Believe in Newark Foundation, Newark Housing, and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
