Mayor Ras J. Baraka, the Newark Municipal Council, CEO and President of Brazusa and the Brazilian Day Festival Jose Moreira, dignitaries and the Brazilian community to hold a ceremony to unveil Brazil Square on Saturday, September 2, at 2 p.m. on Ferry Street and Chambers Street.
The name “Brazil Square” pays homage to the Brazilian community, which has had a great impact on the City of Newark’s economic and artistic development.
A significant Brazilian population resides in Newark’s East Ward. The community has had a big impact on the shaping of the city. The naming of Brazil Square fulfills a long-held dream for the Brazilian community.
A presentation of a mural depicting Brazilian culture will also take place. Attendees will enjoy a colorful event filled with live music and dance. The Brazilian Festival will be held on Saturday, September 2 and Sunday, September 3, from Noon to Midnight. The Brazilian Parade on Sunday will begin at 11 a.m., and proceed from Wilson Avenue to Chambers Street.
