Mayor Baraka, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, Newark Municipal Council, and Chief Education Office Antoinette Baskerville-Richardson will hold a Press Conference Following the Vote of the New Jersey Board of Education

Mayor Ras J. Baraka, President of the American Federation of Teachers Randi Weingarten, the Newark Municipal Council, and Newark Chief Education Officer Antoinette Baskerville-Richardson will hold a press conference following the vote of the New Jersey Board of Education on the return of local control of Newark Public Schools today, Wednesday, September 13, at 3:30 p.m., on the steps of City Hall, a 920 Board Street, Newark. 

The vote of the board comes after the recommendation of State Education Commissioner Kimberly Harrington in August to return local control after a performance review of governance and program and instruction demonstrated that progress had been sustained. The State has maintained local control of Newark Public Schools since 1995. 

The New Jersey Board of Education will formally vote to return control of the Newark Public Schools to the city at its regular meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, September 13, starting at10 a.m., at the Department of Education, at 100 Riverview Plaza, in Trenton.  Mayor Baraka will address the board before the vote.

After the vote, Mayor Baraka will be available for media interviews, before returning to Newark.
