Mayor Baraka to Cut Ribbon to Complete Teachers Village Development

Mayor Ras J. Baraka, CEO RBH Group CEO Ron Beit; Acting Deputy Mayor of Economic and Housing Development Carmelo Garcia; Newark Municipal Council members; Newark Community Economic Development Corporation President Aisha Glover; New Jersey Economic Development Authority CEO Melissa Orsen; and representatives from Goldman Sachs’ Urban Investment Group and Prudential Financial will cut the ribbon to complete Teachers Village on Tuesday, October 10, at 11:30 a.m., in the Courtyard of 17 William Street, at Treat Place, in downtown Newark.

Teachers Village, located in the heart of Newark, stretches five blocks along Halsey Street and Maiden Lane. The mixed-use development contains 204 moderately priced apartments – designed by internationally renowned architect Richard Meier, himself a Newark native. It is home to three charter schools, a daycare center, open space, gardens, and recreational areas for tenants and students. More than 70 percent of the apartments are leased to teachers and educators, creating a 24-hour living, and learning environment.

Teachers Village contains 65,000 square feet of retail space. Tenants include Closet Savvy, Provident Bank, Bella Nail Lounge and Beauty Spa, Krauszer’s convenience and Tonnie’s Minis cupcakes and bakery. Several stores to open soon include medical services, restaurants, and a one-of-a kind fresh food marketplace.
