Latina Empowerment Brunch

Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Deputy Mayor of Community Engagement Jacqueline Quiles will host a Latina Empowerment Brunch on Friday, September 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Robert Treat Hotel, 50 Park Place, in downtown Newark.

The event will bring prominent Latina women together for a morning brunch dedicated to helping Latina professionals and students achieve professional and personal success. Panelists include: “La Bruja”—Caridad de la Luz, Poet/Actor/Activist; Merijoel Duran, Univision Network News Anchor; Gloria B, 93.1 FM Amor, Radio Personality; Mylene Colom, Lead of the Hispanic and Consumer Markets for Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey, Lourdes Cortez, President/CEO of North Jersey Federal Credit Union; Rev. Enid Almazar, Director of Metro Ministry Mobilization at American Bible Society.

The morning brunch will bring professionals and students together for talk about professional and personal success with the panelists. The event is invitation-only. However, Media representatives are welcome and do not have to RSVP.

In light of recent natural disasters, attendees will learn how they can support relief efforts to aid victims of Hurricane Maria. 

The City of Newark is supporting the Hurricane Maria Relief Effort Benefit concert and donation drive taking place on Saturday, October 7, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 870 Mount Prospect Avenue, in Newark’s North Ward.

Necessary supplies will be collected for donation at the event. The concert is free and open to the public.

On Sunday, October 8, a fundraiser will be held in partnership with the American Red Cross to raise money directed to victims of Hurricane Maria/Puerto Rico. The fundraiser will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Flamboyan Manor at 147 Verona Avenue in the city’s North Ward. The goal is to raise $100,000 to help with the relief efforts. Checks should be payable to American Red Cross/Hurricane Maria/Puerto Rico. 

In addition, the Newark Public Schools are taking donated clothing at their schools.
