Black History Month Celebrations in the City of Newark

The City of Newark, under the leadership of Mayor Ras J. Baraka and the Newark Division of Arts and Cultural Affairs, proudly presents a month-long celebration honoring Black History Month. This annual commemoration is dedicated to recognizing the rich heritage, achievements, and cultural contributions of the Black community. Through a dynamic lineup of events, including a flag-raising ceremony, poetry open mic, game night, and a Black business marketplace, the city invites residents and visitors to engage, learn, and celebrate.

From thought-provoking spoken word performances to interactive competitions and economic empowerment initiatives, each event is designed to foster unity, education, and pride in Black excellence. Black Climate Week: We Are Each Other’s Harvest – Feb 18 | 6 PM - 8 PM

Join a thought-provoking book discussion on We Are Each Other’s Harvest, a powerful exploration of Black farmers, land ownership, and resilience. Held at Newark Public Library, this event will foster conversations on the deep connections between Black communities and environmental stewardship.

Down in the Ro Poetry Open MicFeb 19 | 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM

Immerse yourself in an evening of powerful spoken word and creative expression at the Down in the Ro Poetry Open Mic. This event provides a platform for local poets, storytellers, and artists to share their voices, experiences, and culture. Black Climate Week: Sustainability & Climate Unconference – Feb 20 | 5 PM - 8 PM

Engage in an open and collaborative dialogue on climate change, sustainability, and environmental justice at 3rd Space. This interactive event will bring together activists, experts, and community members to share ideas, solutions, and strategies for a more sustainable future in Newark.

Discover the power of sustainable fashion at this hands-on thrifting workshop at Salvation Army. Black History Month Game Night: Battle of the WardsFeb 24 | 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
