Trash and Recycling

The administration is committed to a clean and safe City for all. Help us by learning about important rules and dates that apply to your neighborhood. Use the resources here to find out how to help keep Newark clean.

          Find Your Collection Zone

Zone A: Monday/Thursday
Zone B: Tuesday/Friday

What We Pick Up

Monday (A) /Tuesday (B) /Thursday (A) /Friday (B)

  • Household Trash
  • Place trash in a sturdy can with lid or in plastic bags.
  • Bags must be 1.2 mm thick.  (No grocery or shopping bags)

Monday (Zone A)/Tuesday (Zone B)

  • Recyclables: Newspapers, magazines, cardboard, cereal boxes and junk mail.
  • Place paper and cardboard recyclables in a  recycling blue bin, or inside a clear plastic bag or tied together

Thursday (Zone A)/Friday (Zone B)

  • Recyclable metal: Soda cans and food cans.
  • Recyclable glass:  Glass jars, food jars and liquor bottles.
  • Recyclable plastic:  Milk jugs, soda bottles, water bottles, juice bottles and laundry detergent containers.
  • Please place metal, plastic and glass inside a recycling blue bin or inside a clear plastic bag.

Yard Waste Collection

  • Includes leaves and small twigs tied in a bundle
  • Please put yard waste in a brown bag or tied in a bundle
  • Zone A: 3rd Wednesday of Each Month
  • Zone B: 4th Wednesday of Each Month

Appliances and White Goods

  • Refrigerator, air conditioners, and other large appliances
  • An appointment is required, please call 973-733-4311

 

Bulk Pick-up

Bulky household waste or bulk items are household items that include couches, tables, chairs, mattresses, dressers, closets, rugs, exercise equipment and vanities.

Every residential privately owned property shall be limited to ten (10) bulk items that can be placed outside on the scheduled bulk collection day.

Anything exceeding ten (10) bulk items shall be removed by a private hauler, on the same day, at the owner’s expense.

Any person, firm, corporation, or entity that violates, fails or neglects to comply with the provisions of this Subsection, or rule or regulation promulgated pursuant thereto, shall be punishable upon conviction thereof by a fine or penalty.

Electronics

Electronics (computers, TV, ect.) can be dropped off at Essex Country Electronic Recycling Depot located at 62 Frelinghuysen Ave and 246 Oraton street in Newark. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm and Saturdays 8am to 12:30pm. For more information please call 973-485-9100

Note: Lead acid batteries (household and car) should be dropped off at 62 Frelinghuysen ave. in Newark Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 3pm
