Part Time Contract Position: Per Diem

Compensation: $100 per mediation

Organization: The Civilian Complaint Review Board (“CCRB”) of the City of Newark, NJ is charged with investigating, and mediating complaints against Newark police officers involving the use of force, abuse of authority, discourtesy or offensive language. The board's investigative staff, composed entirely of civilian employees, conducts the agency's investigations.


Mediator’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Facilitates constructive communication between two parties in disagreement with each other by keeping each side calm and allowing each to feel that they are being heard and that their needs are addressed
  • Uses conflict transformation and dispute resolution techniques to create an environment that allows parties to reach solutions that are acceptable to both sides
  • Arranges meetings between parties to facilitate open communication, usually choosing neutral sites that are non-threatening to both sides
  • Conducts interviews with each side, researching the problem to gain a better understanding of how to solve it
  • Coordinate logistics and scheduling so that mediation can be offered during, before and after business hours
  • Responsible for maintaining a tracking system to document the number of mediations offered, completed, disputants, mediators and the status of the resolution
  • Provide appropriate evaluation and follow-up with the disputants within seven (7) days of the date of the mediation to determine the success of the mediation
  • Document the outcome of the mediation on a Mediation Agreement Form


  • Thorough knowledge of conflict resolution and conflict analysis
  • Must be knowledgeable of mediation practices and principles
  • Two years’ direct experience in victim mediation
  • Ability to keep abreast of new guidelines, emerging trends and best practices related to conflict resolution
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of electronic data collection
  • Ability to work with diverse population
  • Must be open and willing to work non-traditional work hours
  • Must be willing to follow CCRB rules and regulations
  • Full knowledge of New Jersey Mediation statute (Uniform Mediation Act, NJSA 2A:23C-1-14) and relevant rules effecting mediation in the State of New Jersey.
  • 3 + years relevant work experience desirable
  • Bilingual ability (Spanish, Portuguese, Creole) a plus


  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education, counseling, conflict analysis and resolution or related field required.
  • Masters in Mediation, conflict resolution or related field desired
