POSITION DESCRIPTION

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be City of Newark Residents.

The Newark Department of Health and Community Wellness is seeking a Health Educator (bilingual English and Spanish) to join our Health Education team at the department. Under the direction of the Health Education Supervisor, the Health Educator will help assess individual and community health education needs; plan, implement and evaluate effective health education programs; coordinate health education services; serve as a resource person in health education.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify target populations and assess health education needs based on health outcome data from the New Jersey Department of Health, Newark community needs assessments and other relevant health related data.
  • Develop health education programs to address community health needs.
  • Implement appropriate health education programs.
  • Visit and speak before members of health, civic and community groups about healthy lifestyles.
  • Help prepare health promotion materials.
  • Prepares reports and correspondence.
  • Maintains records and files.

EDUCATION:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Health Education,

Public Health, Community Health Education, Nursing or a related Health Education field.

EXPERIENCE:

Two (2) years of experience assessing community health education needs and, in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of diversified health programs in a local health development or state or local health agency.

NOTE:

A Master’s Degree in one of the areas listed above may substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.

CERTIFICATION:

Applicants must possess a certification as a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) issued by

the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc.

LICENSE:

Possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey.
